The wood varies from light pink to red, darkening to red brown with light. Silver figure clearly visible. It has clearly demarcated sapwood. The grain is straight or interlocked and the texture is coarse. Density at 12 % moisture content: 0.68 g/cm3.
The blunting effect is normal to high due to silica content. Tendency to tear on quartersawn. Peeling and slicing is reported to be good. Nailing is good but pre-boring is necessary. It tends to split in nailing. Gluing is correct. It dries rapid to normal. Drying requires care in order to minimize defects.
Mengkulang is poorly durable to fungi and is durable to dry wood borers; sapwood demarcated (risk limited to sapwood). Resistance to decay low to moderate.
Mengkulang can be used for several applications such as:
• interior: e.g. high class furniture, veneer, flooring, panelling, boxes and crates, light carpentry, joinery, sliced veneer, formwork
• exterior: e.g. panelling, joinery
Finishing is quite good with filling.
