Itauba
Species profile
The wood varies from yellow brown to dark lustrous brown. Oily aspect. The sapwood is not clearly demarcated. The grain is straight and the texture is fine. Density at 12 % moisture content: 0.86 g/cm3.

The blunting effect is fairly high; peeling is not recommended or without interest and slicing is reported to be good. Some difficulties due to interlocked grain. Nailing is good but pre-boring is necessary. Gluing is correct for interior only. It dries slowly and drying must be slow and careful in order to reduce defects.

Itauba is very durable to fungi and the heartwood is durable to dry wood borers, but sapwood not clearly demarcated. The possible presence of few demarcated sapwood in sawnwoods may have an influence on the expected durability. Due to its high specific gravity and its repulsive extracts content, this species naturally covers the biological hazard class 5 (end-uses in marine environment or in brackish water).

Itauba can be used for several applications such as:
• interior: e.g. panelling, flooring, sliced veneer, high class furniture, seats, stairs, joinery
• exterior: e.g. posts, ship building, bridges, open boats, wood frame house, sleepers, joinery, paneling, vehicle or container flooring, heavy carpentry
